CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION OFFICERS SWORD - Lot #0137

This sword is truly a spectacular creation and the only one of its type that I have ever seen. When I first saw the applied silver bust of Washington on the guard, I almost fell over. The pictures speak for themselves on this one. The blade is etched with "Union Forever". The cast grip with engraved finish work shows the initials JAF inscribed within a shield. The sword was purchased at an estate sale in Bethlehem, Pa. a few years ago. A search of all officers from Pa. regiments found only one with this combination of intitials, and that was Captain Joseph A. Frey of the 153rd Pa. This unit served for only 9 months, but saw severe action at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. It is interesting to note that Frey was from Bethlehem, and that is why I associated the sword to him. I cannot guarantee that this is absolutely his sword, and will make no such claims as others might, but it certainly makes sense that this would be the type of item presented to an officer who served in two of the most important battles of the war. If you like it, call me and we'll kick it around a bit. Have a question about your Civil War Artifact? Click on our blue icon at the top of the page and contact us !
