SMALL FRAME SMITH & WESSON VOLCANIC PISTOL - Lot #4840

Here is an extremely fine condition small, iron-frame Smith & Wesson Volcanic Pistol Type II Pistol (made without lever spur). One of the better examples offered in many years, this gun shows nearly all of its original blue finish to its barrel and generous traces to its frame, especially on the bottom. There are generous amounts of case colors on the hammer and all of the original varnish on the grips. All markings are crisp and clear as is the engraving. The side plates fit together beautifully. A rare example in this condition, this 4 inch, 31 caliber lever action magazine pistol was manufactured by Smith & Wesson Repeating Arms Company which began manufacturing in 1854. The company would be reorganized a year later in 1855, as the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and the rest is history. Smith & Wesson focused their efforts to design and produce a pistol that could fire the self contained metallic cartridge using Rollin Whites bored through cylinder. The Volcanic Repeating Arms Company would become the forefather of the Winchester Repeating Rifle Company.
