CIVIL WAR 6-POUNDER CANNON - Lot #4538

Here's the perfect artifact for your office or gun library. This is a beautiful, original antique bronze cannon tube cast in Spain in 1798. Originally a smooth-bore, it was later rifled and quite possibly done during or just prior to the Civil War. It is about the size of an American Six Pounder Cannon being 63" long from the tip of its cascabel to the end of the bore. It would mount on a standard six pounder carriage with some slight adjustment to the trunnion base. It is marked on the right trunnion 329k, which is about 725 pounds in weight. When cast, it was obviously a smooth-bore and is now a 3.5" rifled bore. The left trunnion shows a serial number. The breech rim is cast "BARCELONA, 1798" and the top of the tube body is engraved with a large and extremely grand cypher motif of King Charles IV of Spain, very elaborate and very beautiful. The most likely scenario of use is that it was quite possibly used in the Napoleonic era in Europe and then shipped to Mexico, then came North with our victorious troops after the Mexican War. From what I have garnered from collectors, it's quite possible that this gun (and its similarly converted mate) were rifled prior to or during the Civil War for testing a new projectile. I'll leave that conjecture up to the buyer who may be able to track this down. I purchased this cannon tube and a second one this fall from a home up in the mountains of western South Carolina where they were displayed in the front garden. Both were originally collected in the late 1800's along with over 50 bronze cannon tubes acquired by a family that owned a large smelting facility in Newark, New Jersey. The owner obviously plucked the best antiques sent to his facility and kept them. The tubes were scattered across their 45 acre estate in Monmouth, New Jersey through the early part of the 20th century. After the property was sold in the 30's, all the cannon tubes were sent for re-melt for the war efforts of WWII with the exception of the two I purchased. The gun is gorgeous and retains a near perfect coral-blue patina. A great antique cannon that probably has Mexican War and/or Civil War association.
