CIVIL WAR STARR DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER - Lot #4981

This is an excellent condition Starr Double-action revolver. During their period of production, approximately 22,000 Starr M-1858 Army revolvers were manufactured with about 16,000 going to fill US government contracts. The remaining production (about 6,000 or about 27%) were sold commercially to the public. This gun is a government contract model showing sub-inspection marks on the major metal parts and final inspection cartouches on its grips. The gun is a 6 shot, .44 caliber revolver with a 6” barrel. The action is very crisp and works well. The gun is mechanically tight as new and times and locks up perfectly. It retains about 90% original bright blue on the barrel with most loss on the right side from flaking. The cylinder shows 90 - 95% blue and the frame 95%. The hammer retains all of its case-color and the grips are outstanding showing a perfect inspectors cartouche on each side. All flaking on the gun has mellowed to a blue-brown patina. The gun over-all shows very limited handling and I doubt it saw much action. The bore is shiny but shows some slight corrosive use which tells me it was issued, carried and fired at the enemy. All in all, an absolutely excellent Starr D/A that will be an excellent fit into a collection of high condition guns. I see these selling at auction in the $2,500 - $3,500 range with the lower priced guns not holding a candle to this one, and the higher priced being not any better than this example. I've therefore priced it affordably.
