COLT OPEN-TOP 44 REVOLVER - Lot #4863

This is a very nice and untouched Colt, 44 rimfire caliber Open-Top. The nice thing about this example is that no one has ever messed with it, as is clearly seen in the photos. The only thing I noticed after an examination was a replaced hammer screw. The markings, edges and action are all sharp. The barrel shows perhaps 15% bright original blue, blending with an even, untouched brown patina. The frame shows traces of original case color in protected areas, again blending with untouched patina. Grips are nice and full and show 80% varnish. The cylinder scene is nearly perfect and the gun shows only traces of any roughness. It's a very nice, smooth gun. These Open-Tops served with the Colt Richards Conversions and the Colt Richards-Mason Revolvers as the bridge between the Colt 1860 Army and the famed Colt Single Action Army of Indian War Cavalry fame. Most of these Open-Tops are found in heavily used condition as they were among the first large caliber cartridge revolvers to head west. As they used the same cartridge as the Henry Rifle and 1866 Winchester, they were popular and hard to come by due to their limited production numbers. I have seen guns similar to this sell for over $10,000. This one appears to be a bargain because I bought it at the right price..
