AMERICAN EAGLE-POMMEL SWORD C. 1820'S - 1830'S - Lot #3035

This exceptionally beautiful example circa 1830’s has a very ornate and unusual set of folding counter guards reminiscent of the Naval Service but without Naval motifs. The folding guards have wonderfully deep cast spread winged eagles on all surfaces. The Ivory grip is beautifully carved and in the best mellow white. The detailed casting and chasing of the hilt is superb and the original gilding is beautiful and has the wonderful frosting that all collectors love. Its blade is fire blue and gold washed in wonderful original finish. The overall gilt scabbard is wonderfully engraved and chased in the most ornate freehand foliate pattern from the mid mount to the throat and again at the drag. This is a most exceptional eagle pommel sword and one of the finest to come on the market in many years. THIS SWORD IS FROM THE RICHARD JOHNSON COLLECTION WHICH HAS ITS OWN SECTION ON THIS WEBSITE.
