This old veteran was used hard and put up wet. It is in the early 5000 serial number range and was most likely issued to a member of the famed Wilder's Brigade, the specialty shock troops that we hear about on the history channel and that untold volumes of information is avalable on in both books and on the internet. Wilder's Brigade inflicted severe damage to Confederate troops throughout their service during the Civil War. This rifle shows heavy saddle wear, weathering, carry and use. The stock shows a varnish that was probably put on to preserve it by a family member. If you want a historical artifact from the Civil War that doesn't cost an arm or a leg, this could be your ticket. If you hurry to a phone.
