This is a presentation militia musket made by A. W. Spies. Originally a flintlock, it has been converted to percussion and retains a spread-winged American Eagle on the right side of the stock. These eagles usually bear some type of inscription for service, shooting prizes or other such awards. This is the first I have encountered where the eagle has no such inscription, but it was probably one of a group designed for such purpose. Almost certainly converted by a Militia for Civil War use. This gun is in very good to near fine condition showing it was used but well cared for.
