BOYLE & GAMBLE STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS SWORD - Lot #4429

A Confederate Boyle & Gamble Civil War Sword. This sword was recently shipped here from a collector in Sweden. A longtime fan of our Civil War, he had purchased this item from a fellow collector in his country. The sword originally came from the family of a Union Civil War Veteran named Axel Leatz, who served with distiction in the 5th New York Volunteers. According to the family from which it first came, Leatz captured this sword from a Confederate Officer. I checked out the story and sure enough, I found Leatz, originally from Sweden, had served with the 5th and was wounded at Bethesda Church in June of 1864. He later published a book based on his experiences during the war that is available on line. I assume he went back to his country after the war, but don't know the particulars. As this sword has changed hands a few times, there is no solid provenance on its origin. It was purchased with that in mind, as just the sword with a verbal history. However I have no problem providing the name and phone number of the seller to whomever may purchase this sword should they wish to ask further questions. That all being said, this is a very good condition Confederate Boyle & Gamble Sword with etched blade. The blade has been cleaned and the etching is barely visible unless held at certain angles to a light source. I've been told there are ways to enhance the etching and a new owner may want to research the possibilities. The scabbard is 100% original and very sound. The brass is in a medium patina finish with slight traces of original gold gilt. The grip is untouched showing its original leather wrap and wire with some areas where the leather is worn smooth to expose the wood core. All in all, a very sound, very good condition Confederate Staff & Field with etched blade and a verbal history.
