CIVIL WAR FIRST MODEL MAYNARD CARBINE - Lot #4465

The Maynard Carbine was developed by dental surgeon and firearms innovator Dr. Edward Maynard who formed the Massachusetts Arms Company in 1857, which was awarded its first government contract for 400 of their .50 military pattern carbines. Research indicates that the majority of the early First Model Maynard carbines eventually went to the states of Mississippi, Florida and Georgia. The famed "Jeff Davis Legion" were armed with First Model Maynard Carbines. The production of the 1st Model Maynard was brought to an end by a fire at the Massachusetts Arms Company factory in January of 1861. Dr. Maynard proceeded to buy out all of the various partners and owners of the company in 1862 and by 1863 the factory was back in business, producing the 2nd Model Maynard Carbine for the US Ordnance Department.

This 1st Model Maynard Carbine is in excellent, untouched and uncleaned condition as found recently in an attic in Mississippi, and certainly one of the better known examples. The gun is a standard military style issue with a 20” .50 caliber barrel. Based upon Confederate purchase records, this gun was almost certainly sold to either Mississippi or Georgia with the majority going to Mississippi. The barrel retains 85%+ Military Blue and the frame shows about 50% with the balance of surfaces a mix of brown and grey patina. Screw heads are excellent as are the markings, edges, action and wood, which retains the original Maynard label in the patch-box. This is an outstanding condition example of a very rare Civil War Carbine that was most likely used in the South.
