INSCRIBED PRESENTATION STAFF & FIELD CIVIL WAR OFFICERS SWORD, G.W. SIMS, PHILADELPHIA. - Lot #0476

This is another great Civil War find. This really beautifull S&F is inscribed to "C.L. Darbie". It's beautifull, retaining about 70% original Gold Gilt finish to the brass hilt, mounts and drag, 99% original silver plate on the scabbard and most all the original silver on the grip. The Eagle-Head quillion is set with ruby or garnet eyes. The only Civil War soldier that was an officer that we could remotely match to the inscription was a Lt. Charles L. Darby of the 20th Georgia. Obviously, it would be a stretch to claim that this was his sword. It is interesting to note however, that this swords original etched blade dated 1862 and marked by Collins has the usual open bordered panel on its left side like most any other Staff & Field. The difference is that this panel, which usually shows a boldly etched "U.S." is blank and never had anything in it. I have never seen a Collins blade with a blank panel, and am aware that there are many G.W. Simons high grade swords out there in collections, and every one I've ever seen had the etched US. I feel this may have been a special order and had the "US" motif purposely omitted. There were many Northerners who fought for the South as well as Southerners that attended college or visited the North frequently before and even during the war in its early stages. A strong research effort should be performed by the new owner of this fine artifact. The results of such an endeavor could be quite exciting. Even with no inscription, this sword stands on its own in terms of rarity and condition and would make a great addition to any collection.
