COLT NAVY REVOLVER, INSCRIBED AND IDENTIFIED - Lot #4468

In Civil War Collecting, identified items are certainly the "grand prize". This is A Civil War era Colt Navy Revolver that has such history. From its appearance, it has certainly seen heavy use and weathering. In heavy brown patina, just traces of scene and worn grips, the gun still functions properly and has good markings. The key to its history is on its grip-straps. It is stamp inscribed, "CAPTURED FROM MAJ. GEN'L. JOHN MORGAN. C.S.A. SEP'T 4, 1864 BY MAJ. C NEWELL. U.S.A.". The die stamps are those of a sutler or quartermaster and such dies were commonly used on id tags and other artifacts specifically for soldiers (in the case of a tag) or their equipment and personal belongings. In my opinion, and those of a few other well-known dealers and historians, the markings on this gun are "unquestionably of the period". Major Cicero Newell did indeed command the 10th Michigan Cavalry that was instrumental in the capture of Morgans' band on September 4, 1864 and the fateful and often reported death of John Hunt Morgan. I certainly don't make the claim that this gun was taken from the dead hand of John Hunt Morgan, but I do believe that this gun was one that was taken or captured during the event and in the vicinity of where the famed Confederate raider went down. It was probably marked and then presented to Newell. This is a wonderful and original piece of Civil War History.
