ANTIQUE KENTUCKY MOUNTAIN RIFLE - Lot #4870

This is one of the greatest guns I've come across in recent years. I don't mean it's expensive or was owned by a famous person. It's not the most rare, nor is it in great condition. It's just one of those guns that we always wish could talk. It's big, bad, and highly decorated, and when I first opened the case to look at it, it just had that look of one of the rootin-est, tootin-est, flame-spitting, smoke blowing, fire-eating, animal and man devouring death stick I'd ever laid eyes on. The gun was obviously a glorious creation in its original state and now shows the scars and heavy use that it obviously incurred. The gun shows several period repairs to the stock, all well-done and all still secure, attesting to the previous owners need of a serviceable arm. The patch-box lid is replaced and I believe the gun was probably originally a flint-lock which is now replaced with a cap-lock. The piece of wood that the original maker chose still shows magnificent curl and a beautiful iridescence as you turn it in the light. The stock still retains a multitude of brass and coin silver inlays in the form of hearts, half-moons and stars, along with very elaborate toe and wear-plates full of piercings. When I think of this gun, I think of a Mountain Man or Indian out in the western mountains or plains with this rifle laying across his lap while saddled, as he heads west for the hunt or trap.
